Green Detox Smoothie

It’s finals week, which means sleep levels are at an all time low and cooking? What’s that? When I’m busy studying I barely have time to prep food let alone cook it. Also, I’m sure a lot of you stress eat, which is totally normal. This smoothie is the answer to all of your problems. You’re probably wondering what makes this a “detox” smoothie, so let me enlighten you! The secret ingredients are the pineapple and ginger. The two combined flush out your system, basically you just pee, a lot (sorry if that just got too real). Even if I haven’t drank a ton of water before this smoothie, I still have to run to the ladies room, it’s magical. This has been my secret (one of them) to flattening my tummy. I normally add mango for more flavor but sometimes you just gotta work with what you’ve got. Follow this recipe for yummy healthy goodness:

Ingredients:

  • 1 banana
  • 1 cup of pineapple
  • Ginger root (a 1 inch piece)
  • 2 cups of spinach
  • 1/4 cup of soy milk
  • Chia seeds
  • Ice to preference

Storage tip: My roommate and I save jars from pickles and tomato sauce and they work like a charm! We also use mason jars (if we can find the lids!)

Farm to Table

It seems as though everyone is going organic these days. Gluten free, dairy free, cage free, it’s like food has never been so liberated until now. So what’s the newest fad since going organic? Farm to table. Restaurants all over the world are embracing the freshness of growing the food they sell onsite.

When I first heard of this concept, fresh is exactly what came to mind, but not in the summer salad type of way. (Warning this next line is graphic). I envisioned a farmer going out back behind a barn with a machete, slaughtering a fresh chicken (cage free of course), throwing it on the grill and then laying it over my summer salad. To put your mind at ease, I’m sure they read it a nice story first or sing it a lullaby.

On a more serious note, the restaurant that I visited in Mexico gave me a fantastic first impression of what farm to table is supposed to be like. Everything about Flora’s Farm Bar was fresh. From being greeted with a refreshing cool towel to my garden pasta, I felt healthy and at ease the entire time. Their motto was “Food so fresh you can reach out and grab it.” They were not kidding. We had an orange tree growing right behind our table.

One of the finest touches of this quaint and trendy farm was their fresh market. If you wanted to take the freshness home with you, the staff welcomed you to shop their fruit and vegetable stand. I snagged myself some home made granola which was absolutely delightful.

So next time you’re grocery shopping at Whole Foods or as my boyfriend likes to call it “Half Pay Check” ask yourself, is this as fresh as it gets? If the answer is no, google the nearest farm to table restaurant nearest you and run there. After all, you are what you eat.
